Global Pyro

Alexander Moreira

Alexander is a 39 year old Brazilian artist living in Estrela and enjoys art in his pastime. Most of his work is created using watercolors, pastels and nankins, and since 2005 he has been developing pyrography.
"My pyrography work is a little different, I use my own technique, which is different from those seen on the internet. I have a pyrograph ("Palante" brand) that I sometimes use, but I prefer to use a kind of soldering iron which is very cheap and very easy to acquire. I also prefer to use MDF pieces instead of real wood.
I can explain: with a grindstone I waste the points of the soldering irons to obtain different shapes like pointed sharp ones, round ones, flat ones, etc..., according to the effects I wish to obtain in the work. Due to its lesser heating (much less than the pyrograph) it's possible to modulate different kinds of tones - from lighter to darker ones, either by the pressure applied to the surface or by the time of contact. By doing so I can say that I almost have a kind of pencil. The option of using MDF pieces is due to the fact that its surface is flat and even, it has a constant texture by not having the inconvinience of wood knots, allowing major control on the whole piece of art."
